Eating Disorders affect approximately 30 million people in the US and span all races, genders, age groups and socioeconomic populations. Persons who struggle with eating disorder behaviors are often ambivalent about recovery and their illness thrives in secrecy and isolation. It is not uncommon for someone to present wanting help with a co-occurring mental health challenge and for the eating disorder to be revealed upon further assessment. Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate in mental health, eclipsed only recently by deaths due to opioid overdoses. This presentation by a certified eating disorder specialist and supervisor will provide information regarding recognizing and understanding the unique make up of persons with eating disorders, how to screen and refer for care as well as how to support family members.
